Food is always at its best when in its prime growing season and this tends to echo the natural cycle of the year and the year’s weather. Following the seasons both in what you grow in the garden and what you buy in the shops will bring you the freshest foods, the best flavour, maximum nutrition content and crispness or tenderness, and ultimately the best value for money. However most produce is in season for 2-3 months so in early season it may be smaller, younger and maybe sold at a premium until that food is in good supply. Similarly at the end of the season produce can be flagging and yet also maybe at a bargain price – so be aware of the Seasons.
Although the arrival of food seasons varies a little around the country here is a brief guide – but both my blog and recipe Archive will give you more ideas throughout the year.
